Does Your Oral Health Change if You Go on a Diet?
Posted on 7/7/2020 by Dynamic Dental Office
Does Your Oral Health Change if You Go on a Diet? Many people that are unhappy with their bodies go on a diet to make a change. With willpower and dedication, this can be achieved. While dieting has an effect on your body primarily, it will also change your oral health. Today we will be discussing how dieting can have a positive change for your mouth

It Is All About The Foods You Eat

When you are dieting, you are opting for healthier options than what you were choosing prior to the diet. Many people cut out their candy intake significantly and switch to fresh fruits. Instead of cheese-dusted corn chips, they switch to vegetables for a snack. And for meals they might choose baked salmon over fried chicken.

These swaps are significantly better for your teeth overall. Fresh produce such as celery and carrots help clean your teeth as you are eating; compare that to cheese puffs which only help create stains! Salmon is both easy on the teeth when chewing while also providing DHA (docosahexaenoic) to help prevent periodontal disease.

As you can see, the term “healthy” when talking about food doesn't only apply to body health, these foods are also great choices when looking out for your oral hygiene. As long as you make good choices while limiting treats, your mouth will be happy!

Not All Diets Are The Same

We were primarily discussing the traditional diet, but some people choose to lose weight via sugary shakes marketed as meal replacements. At this point, to your teeth, that is like going to a fast-food joint and ordering a milkshake every day. While you may drop the pounds with this method, it won't do any favors for your teeth and it doesn't let you learn how to eat healthier foods daily.
